Overview of the Nonprofit Sector

Earning your degree in nonprofit management creates opportunities in a variety of nonprofit settings. The term 'charitable organizations' encompasses most public nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity or the Make-a-Wish Foundation of America. Many people pursuing nonprofit work choose a focus area that matches one of their greatest passions. Whether the organization's mission is global or local, they create positive change that can last generations. Students should explore different nonprofits and meet with professionals working in fields like those listed below.

Community development charities include food pantries, youth development services, homeless services, women's centers, and other family crisis services. Volunteers of America and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America are examples of well-known national community nonprofits, but many of these charities are local. Close to Wesleyan's campus in Macon, GA is the Middle Georgia Food Bank and many other community-focused nonprofits.

Reaching and serving people doesn't always have to be through community-based projects. Focusing on arts and culture can be rewarding by providing enriching experiences in museums, art galleries, libraries, and performance centers. If religious organizations speak to you, there are also options to pursue work across the United States and abroad.

Another one of the most popular charity designations are animal and environmental nonprofits including:

  • Farming & Agricultural Groups
  • Wildlife Conservation Organizations
  • Hunting and Fishing Conservation Groups
  • Pet and Animal Welfare Organizations
  • Zoos and Aquariums
  • Environmental Conservation and Protection Organizations

Not all organizations are 501(c)3 nonprofits. Graduates with a nonprofit degree are qualified to work in civic leagues and social welfare organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Government agencies also hire those with backgrounds in nonprofit management.
