The virtual lecture series: The Art of Empathy serves as a timely and important catalyst for healing and connecting on our campus and in the greater central Georgia community and beyond. Through this series we can better understand how empathy can be used as a powerful tool to expand emotional intelligence, tolerance, and community wellbeing.

Panelists: Karleen Gardner, Deputy Director for Learning and Engagement at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Elif M. Gokcigdem, Ph.D., Founder, Empathy-Building Through Museums & Author, “Fostering Empathy Through Museums” and “Designing for Empathy”. Zorana Pringle, Ph.D., is a Senior Research Scientist and Director of the Creativity and Emotions lab at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.
Empathy involves feeling compassion for others and understanding their perspectives, and it helps to inspire kind behaviors like giving, volunteering, and helping. This presentation will first review some evidence-based strategies that increase empathy and kindness, and will then share the latest scientific insights on the role of the arts.
Sara Konrath is a social psychologist who directs the Interdisciplinary Program on Empathy and Altruism Research (iPEARlab.org) at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Her research explores changes over time in social and emotional traits among American young people.
Is there a limit to the human capacity to empathize? What forces—historically, politically, socially, even physically in terms of the laws of the natural world—might set untraversable boundary lines to this most hopeful of human behaviors? In this lecture, artist Dario Robleto will discuss how the most challenging obstacles to empathy can serve as a source of invention and creativity to its evolution.
Dario Robletto is an American transdisciplinary artist, researcher, writer, teacher and “citizen-scientist”. His research-driven practice results in intricately handcrafted objects that reflect his exploration of music, popular culture, science, war, and American history.
