To strengthen Wesleyan's financial future, our endowment needs to reach $100 million, which would generate about $5 million each year to support scholarships, faculty salaries, technology and many more necessities to ensure Wesleyan's strength forever.
Wesleyan’s greatest challenge is making exceptional academic opportunities available to students who have the ability and desire to excel on our campus. On average, the College awards more than $4 million per year in scholarship aid, approximately 57% of which is funded from operating income rather than the endowment. An additional $16 million for scholarships will reduce the amount needed from operations while generating roughly $800,000 for student financial support.
Wesleyan boasts a student/teacher ratio of 14:1, and 90% of the full-time faculty hold the highest degree in their field. Because we are committed to providing our students with the best possible instruction and academic opportunities, we must invest in our faculty and support their needs in the classroom. By adding $9 million to the endowment to support our faculty and their teaching, we could generate approximately $450,000 for faculty positions and instruction.
Teaching and technology are intrinsically linked in today’s classrooms, especially at Wesleyan, since many of our classes are taught in an interactive, seminar style. Technology is constantly changing, and it is expensive to maintain the state-of-the-art equipment to support the academic programs. By creating an endowment for technology, we can establish a revolving fund that provides income for ongoing upgrades for hardware and software.
