Shanita Douglas Miller ’06

It’s been noted by many that as a student Shanita Douglas Miller could brighten up any room with just her smile, and her laugh could be heard from a mile away. Known for her welcoming spirit and campus involvement, she was a well-loved student who took pride in making genuine connections with her peers and engaging in the sisterhood traditions at Wesleyan. While on campus, she served in many roles with her most notable ones being the Chancellor on the Council of Judicial Affairs, Mortar Board, SGA, and STUNT (all 4 years!).

After graduating in 2006 with a double major in French and in international relations, Shanita traveled to France to teach English as a second language through the French Embassy’s TAPIF program. Discovering that second-language acquisition and multicultural awareness were the nexus to connecting with people, this experience laid the groundwork for a career in cultivating relationships and community engagement.

Upon returning to the U.S., Shanita continued to serve in education, working at the International School of Louisiana, where she taught French. Afterward, she pursued her master’s degree in leadership and human development at The George Washington University where she then transitioned to non-profit leadership, working for notable organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association, the Alliance Francaise of Atlanta, and Girls Inc. In 2020, Shanita officially retired from non-profit development after being in this field for 10+ years and started her own business called, Black Girl’s Guide to Atlanta - a social media platform and consultancy that serves to help woman-owned and Black-owned small businesses in digital marketing, content strategy, and in social media engagement. Today her social media platforms have a combined 75,000 followers, and she has supported more than 100 small-businesses. Shanita’s talent in creating such an influential platform has resulted in her being voted Best Self Atlanta’s Top 40 Under 40 Inspiring Innovators in Atlanta, an entrepreneur spotlight and feature by US Bank/ Elavon, and being named one of South Downtown Atlanta’s Women to Follow.

In addition to her professional career, Shanita remains dedicated to Wesleyan as an active alumna volunteer. For 15+ years she has served Wesleyan in the following ways: President of the Wesleyan Atlanta Alumnae Club, Vice President of Educational Enrichment on the WCAA’s Board of Managers, STUNT judge, Marker Speaker at Baccalaureate, Wesleyan College fair volunteer at local high schools, and she has provided internships to Wesleyannes. Shanita also has assisted with a variety of services requested by the alumnae office, devoting 100% of her ability to accomplish whatever tasks are assigned to her.

Shanita Douglas Miller embodies the very essence of a dedicated young alumna. She has demonstrated her support for the College through her involvement for nearly 20 years by volunteering her personal time. Her story serves as an inspiration to this generation of students that success comes to those who walk in their purpose and remain true to their core.
